The Athgarvan Senior Men’s Team had a hard fought victory tonight over St Laurences at the Athgarvan pitch. In ideal playing conditions, both sides played some entertaining football as the momemtum shifted throughout the match.
Laurences started well, and dominated possession in the early stages as they played down the hill into the Athgarvan school end. However Athgarvan seemed much more dangerous in attack, and indeed they scored from almost every foray they had into the Larries’ half in the opening 30 mins. Full forward Damien Smyth was particularly impressive scoring some fantastic points. The best score of the first half came from the boot of Athgarvan midfielder Gavin Coffey after a great run through the Larries’ defence.
Athgarvan pulled into a four point lead after great work from John Tidd set up Damian Smyth for a well-taken goal that nestled in the top corner of the net, giving the ‘keeper no chance. It looked like Athgarvan were pulling away at that stage, but in the dying minutes of the first half, Laurences responded well and claimed a rather fortuitous goal to pull them back into the game. They tagged on another point to make the half time score 1-06 to 1-04 in Athgarvan’s favour.
The second half began with more of the same, with Damien Smyth tagging on a point from a free in the early minutes. Ten minutes later, Laurences worked the ball well to allow them to score an equalising goal from close range. Athgarvan though, were not prepared to lose for the first time this season, and they answered back minutes later with captain Danny Whelan scoring a great goal with a cool finish to put the home team back in control. Athgarvan held on for the remainder of the match and survived a late scare thanks to goalkeeping heroics from Gavan Doyle to finish winning by four points. Best for Athgarvan were Derek Nolan in midfield, Damian Smyth up front, while Brian Gormley & Willie Delaney gave solid performances in defence.
